ABOUT TU;MA

“I didn’t think I could live life without you until I realized your spirit forever lives within me. The memories we created may not replace your physical absence, but in moments I miss you most, they give me peace and bring me a kind of comfort that allows me to push forward.” -JM

In 2017 I lost my brother to suicide.  He was only 23 years old and legally named Ray, but referred to as Uncle Tuma by the nieces and nephews he left behind. Keeping that in mind, this movement started to keep his memory alive and to honor him, so that our little ones would never forget him. It was a bit eerie to have come up with the perfect acronym utilizing his nickname because strangely, it suited so perfectly. I have turned my tragedy into a beautiful story in hopes to save the lives of those silently suffering.

Too often, people mask their mental health challenges; they fear judgement, they fear labels, they fear displacement. To end this stigma, my team and I focus on shifting the conversation to influence the importance and the positive effects “talking it up” about mental health can do for our community. We believe a stigma free WE starts with a stigma free ME!

I decided to Talk It Up, but it takes a handful of us to continue the conversation. This mental health movement is spearheaded not only by me, but people who have personal experiences; whether diagnosed with a mental illness, grieving the loss of a loved one, survivors of suicide and professionals in the field of mental health.

We never know what someone may be going through internally (despite their external behavior), that part of our mission is to continue spreading kindness. We remind people to be conscious with their choice of words for language is incredibly powerful. Our tone when we speak as well as our actions can affect someone deeply either positively or negatively that being mindful about our approach towards others can prevent the negative and impact the positive. We must work harder daily and take accountability for the things we say and do, or even, lack thereof.

TU;MA believes the mental well-being of every individual begins when they can finally unmask and are willing to utilize the resources and tools we have available within our community. People will never forget how you made them feel and it is with sincere hearts and genuine love that our entire team’s mission is to promote positive advocacy surrounding Mental Health to help reduce the fear many have about seeking appropriate care should they need it. We want to be the voices that speak for those who won’t and for those we have lost.

At TU;MA we pledge to be a Ray of Light needed for those trialing through dark moments. The Ray of HOPE in reminding people to Hold On Pain Ends. And, together we will consistently, constantly and continually remind people to- CHOOSE LIFE. CHOOSE HAPPINESS. CHOOSE YOU. because every storm no matter its intensity is promised a Ray of Sunshine.

By supporting TU;MA, you agree to be an influencer and believer in creating positive change surrounding the topic of Mental Health.  You become part of the conversation and your voice makes an incredible impact.

I appreciate your pledge and support.

Love to Love,
